Role of the Manager in Scrum
Pete Deemer, our Business Manager at the Scrum Training Institute, has written an excellent article on the role of the manager in Scrum.

- Like me, you probably get asked the following question quite often: "What's the role of a manager in Scrum? I'm a manager, and since I'm not mentioned in the definition of the Scrum roles, and the team is self-organizing, does that mean I'm supposed to just... disappear?"
- I recently wrote a short guide to answering this question. A couple other CST's have stumbled upon it in the last few weeks and emailed me to say they found it quite useful, and I wanted to share it with the full group as well. If you have any feedback or suggestions, I'd love to hear. You can download the guide at: Manager 2.0: The Role of the Manager in Scrum http://scrumti.com/home/

This is an excellent guide! It is very well written and makes good use of scenarios.
I have one thought about teams being "...conditioned to follow orders and not being able to self-organize until there are no orders to follow." Some teams and individuals will need guidance as they move from “being directed” to being able to self-organize. Some coaching and skills-building may have to take place to help people make the transition – and to keep the organization reasonably productive in the interim.
The scenario involving Simon rang true. We avoided this particular situation in my company through a collaborative effort amongst those of us on the management team. We worked on an “Agile Expectations” document (it was short, and to the point) that was a catalyst for everyone on the management team to research, discuss, and codify what they understood about Agile. This helped everyone understand what they were buying into with “Agile development.”
Again, I found this to be a great read!
Dave that is a great idea for leadership to take leadership on their understanding on Scrum and what they are buying into.
